New Bentley Continental GT and GTC – V8 hybrid powertrain & performance
The 2024 Continental GT has a plug-in hybrid option, which will replace the long-standing 6.0-liter W12 engine. Known as the “Speed”, the car reaches 208 mph in the coupe version and 177 mph in the convertible GTC. Powered by a combination of a V8 engine and an electric motor, it delivers a total of 771 bhp and 737 lb-ft (1,000 Nm), making it Bentley’s most powerful car.
The electric motor in the car is connected to a 22 kWh battery that can offer up to 50 miles of electric range. It gets fully charged in about 2 hours and 45 minutes using a public AC charger or in about three and a half hours using a home wall box. The electric motor lets you commute daily without using the engine. But when you use it, the V8 engine sounds authentic with a deep, natural sound from the exhaust
The engine can charge the battery while driving, but this increases fuel consumption. For best performance, it is best to use both the electric motor and the engine together. This combination provides quick acceleration from the electric motor at low speeds and strong engine power at high speeds. The electric motor reduces turbo lag, allowing Bentley to use an efficient turbocharger. This aids in smooth gear shifts and maintains brisk acceleration under hard acceleration. From my experience with similar Mercedes-AMG models, I expect the Bentley to accelerate quickly from start to top speed in just 33 seconds.
Range, Charging, and Battery Life
Bentley says the plug-in hybrid uses a 21.8 kWh battery, which we estimate gives it about 25 miles of electric range.
Fuel Economy and Real-World MPG
The EPA hasn’t yet told us how fuel-efficient the new hybrid Continental GT will be. Just because it’s now a hybrid doesn’t mean it will become a fuel-efficient car. We’ll test it on the highway ourselves and update this story with our findings soon.
Design
The new Continental GT Speed sports a distinctive look with its striking new headlamp design inspired by the intense gaze of the tiger. It features single oval headlamps with sharp edges, complemented by smoke-effect rear lamps and dark exterior details. The car’s appearance is enhanced by body-coloured styling specifications and sports side sills, as well as distinctive Speed wheels and grille. Inside, the ‘Speed’ emblem is prominent on the treadplates, dashboard and seat embroidery. Leather and Dynamica seats offer an exclusive Speed color split, and the doors are designed with a stunning 3D diamond hide finish.
