Engine and Performance
The Meridian runs on Jeep’s familiar 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engine, available with a six-speed manual or a nine-speed automatic transmission. The latter is paired with optional all-wheel drive, which we tested off-road. At launch, only the diesel option was offered, which seems appropriate for its class and expected performance. Inside, the cabin effectively hides the noise of the diesel engine, and steering vibration is minimal, which enhances overall comfort and driving pleasure.
The FWD variant we drove doesn’t have any driving modes. Even though the 168bhp engine sounds modest for a vehicle weighing 1.8 tonnes, it does a pretty good job. Jeep claims the Meridian can accelerate from 0-100kmph in 10.8 seconds. With 350Nm of torque, it picks up speed quickly with effortless gearshifts. However, the torque converter transmission isn’t the fastest, exhibiting a slight delay in response
Features and Equipment
The Meridian inherits many features from the Compass, including safety features like multi-zone automatic climate control, a powered tailgate, and a panoramic sunroof. While ventilated seats would have been appreciated, especially in our weather, Jeep prioritizes safety with six airbags, a 360-degree camera and advanced systems like hill start assist and automatic vehicle hold. The SUV incorporates hot-stamped high-strength steel for strength and includes safety features like ABS, ESC, and TPMS. However, the Meridian could have benefited from additional modern technologies like adaptive cruise control, blind-spot detection, lane departure warning, and a head-up display (HUD). These features are now more commonly expected in contemporary vehicles.

Jeep Meridian: Blending Off-Road Spirit with Premium Appeal
Jeep is renowned for its rugged off-road vehicles that are equally practical for daily use. The new Meridian exemplifies this reputation, blending refined on-road performance with great off-road capability. It has an attractive exterior and a luxuriously appointed cabin with the latest features. Competitive pricing could make it a handsome upgrade for buyers, including existing Compass owners looking for a third row. This strategic move could allow Jeep to enter the premium seven-seater vehicle market, which the Toyota Fortuner previously dominated after the departure of the Ford Endeavour.
Starting at around the price of the top-spec Compass (Rs 31 lakh ex-showroom), the Meridian is set to attract value-oriented buyers, offering a combination of adventure-ready capability and premium appeal.
